(Photo by Keith Thorpe, PENINSULA DAILY NEWS.) DATE: December 3, 2018 To me, the front page photo and caption, PENINSULA DAILY NEWS, December 2, 2018 featuring Jen Swanson, Marketing Manager, First Federal (Port Angeles, WA) tossing a frozen turkey down the ice in a round of "turkey curling" during the official grand opening of the Port Angeles Winter Ice Village are nothing short of disgusting. The photo and caption clearly demean a vital food source for human subsistence. Meanwhile, malnutrition and hunger remain abhorrent realities. Point -by -point: 1. On the international level: Forty-five percent of all child deaths worldwide are from causes related to undernutrition, or 3.1 million children a year. (Source: www.actionagainsthunger.org/global-poverty-hunger-facts) Tossing a frozen turkey down the ice for a "turkey curling" event in a skating rink demonstrates contempt for this reality! 2. On the national level: More than 30 million Americans experience hunger regularly or are at risk of going hungry; some 8.5 million Americans experience hunger on a daily basis. (Source: www.livestrong.com/article/487412-malnutrition-in-america) Tossing a frozen turkey down the ice for a "turkey curling" event in a skating rink demonstrates contempt for this reality! 3. On the local level: PENINSULA DAILY NEWS highlights free turkey dinners for the less fortunate during the Thanksgiving holiday (e.g., dinners hosted by Salvation Army, Port Angeles, WA). Tossing a frozen turkey down the ice for a "turkey curling" event in a skating rink demonstrates contempt for this reality! An argument that the frozen turkeys used in the "turkey curling" event were never thawed or wasted is irrelevant. The blatant disregard of precious food is the closing message from the Mark Abshire Page two of two "turkey curling" event, imaged and reported by PENINSULA DAILY NEWS. (In principle, the closing message would remain the same had other food sources [e.g., frozen salmon; pumpkins] been used in the "curling" event.) P.S. I admit to being sensitive over the demeaning of 2Dy food source; during a stage in my earlier life, I selectively removed contents of garbage cans outside grocery stores and restaurants in order to get food into my stomach. c.
