Dar Mr Randall: As you requested we have analyzed the Bob Vreeland residence at 520 E 10 th Street in Port Angeles. This work was to determine structural adequacy of the existing house to support an 11 module solar array on each side of the pitched roof. These solar panels add a 3 pound per square foot gravity load to the IBC and City required 25 psf snow load and 15 psf (approximate) dead load. These Code required loads apply to the entire roof surface. The solar panel loads are on a width of 5.5 feet, measured down from the ridge, over a length of roughly 36 feet centered on the house. The wind induced uplift load at this location is approximately 11 psf. To provide additional detail, copies of my design calculations and your August 1 letter, which have sketches and photos, are attached. From my analysis of the information you provided, I find that the roof structure requires additional reinforcing to adequately support the aforementioned gravity loads. The roof will adequately resist uplift loads. The gravity load reinforcing is for roof framing on the west side only. The east side is acceptable as it exists. The west side work includes: • adding a 1.75 inch by 9.25 inch by 18 foot LVL beam on each side of the existing attic space pony wall on the south, • adding a 1.75 inch by 11.25 inch by 20 foot LVL beam on each side of the existing attic space pony wall on the north, and • adding a 6 inch by 6 inch (or equivalent) post in the interior bearing wall under ends of the 18 and 20 foot LVLs. The post needs to have an existing or new concrete foundation. Details that show these installations are on pages 7 & 8 of my calculations. The nature of this project makes it difficult to detail all required connections and some decisions may need to wait until reinforcing work is underway. Therefore, I am happy to visit the project when construction is started to help if necessary. I understand that you intend to use Unirac Solar Mount rails for attaching these panels to the roof. From my analysis I believe that SM (standard mount) Rails are adequate. However, the rail to roof connection should be spaced at 32 inches, perpendicular to the roof joists, instead of your standard 4 foot spacing. Additionally, the top rail to joist and bottom rail to joist connection should be staggered so that each joist has only one load bearing point. This is shown by my sketch on page 10 of the calculations. Use a 5/16 inch diameter by 3 inch long lag bolt at each of these connection points. Thank you for selecting NTI for this work. Please let me know if you need anything additional. Mr. Vreeland has contracted with Power Trip Energy to install a 5.28 kW Sharp solar array on the east and west roofs of his home. The city of Port Angeles handles the electrical permit and requires a building permit also be obtained prior to the installation of a solar PV system. I have attached the city of Port Angeles FAQ sheet for residential solar installations. This handout indicates that two sets of pla n*s must be prepared which show: 1. The solar array can handle a minimum of 25 psf snow load and 100 mph winds;and, 2. Roof construction details be provided to show that the roof can handle the additional weight of the solar modules. We request your assistance in providing the necessary calculations and drawings to obtain the city building permit. Per our previous projects of this type you estimated the cost to do this would be about$500. Please let me know if this project will be significantly different in cost. Different Modules and Racking from Last Application—Separate Engineering Letter Needed This project is different from the previous analysis for McMahon in that we need an engineering letter from you addressing the issues of the solar array handling the 25 pounds of snow load and 100 mph winds. For McMahon we had engineering letters provided to us by the Solar Module manufacturer. In the present case,we will be using different equipment with solar modules made by Sharp and the racking made by Unirac. The installation manual for the Sharp solar modules states that the modules meet the minimum 25 psf of snow load(per their attached install manual they are rated for 50 psf of snow load). I have also attached the Unirae SolarMount installation manual. This manual provides the method for determining the appropriate number of attachment points and their minimum separation to comply with building codes. This methodology for documenting wind loads and determining the rail span and attachment points is located on pages 3 —13 of the Unirac manual. We are seeking your assistance in documenting that the design meets the city of Port Angeles requirements as well as the rail span and attachment points needed. We request that you provide a separate letter addressing both these issues. Please also state whether our standard 4 ft.on center attachment Point method is adequate or should be modified. We hope to reuse this letter for submittal to the city when, and if,we have future Sharp/Unirac installations of this type. Description of Vreeland House and Roof System Mr.Vreeland's home is different from our prior projects in Port Angeles in that it is an older home that has been modified and expanded over time. The original house was much smaller Oust the south 20 feet of the current home) and the roof actually ran perpendicular to the current roof. This original house was moved to the site and was later expanded and the roof structure was replaced and reoriented to face east and west. The ceiling joists in the SW corner are original and run perpendicular to the rafters for this reason. The roof truss system in the home is 2"x 6" type construction but has been reinforced with glularn beams and collar ties(see photos below). I realize this structure is quite different than the truss roofs on newer construction you previously evaluated for us,but I hope you are able to work with us to help Mr. Vreeland install a solar array on his home. Solar Array Layout—Calculations Needed for Racking We have designed the solar array to be on the east and west roof surfaces. Because the solar array takes up a small portion of each roof, it could be moved to cover different portions of the roof if this helped with your calculations. The proposed attachment points for the modules are shown on my drawings and are based upon 4 foot center locations, but can be modified if needed. Photos of Home I've attached photos of Mr. Vreeland's home. It is basically a one story home over a daylight basement with an attached garage at the basement level. It is located in an urban setting on gently sloping land(approximately 10 degrees slope). The roof pitch is 4:12(18.4 degrees). There is a single course of composition shingles on the roof The roof is sheathed with 7/16"plywood. Issue 1: Solar Modules and Minimum 25 PSF Snow Load This issue is addressed by the installation manual for the Sharp ND-240QCJ solar modules, which state on page 4 the following,"These mounting methods are designed to allow module loading of 2,400 Pa(50.1 lb/ft2)." Please write a separate letter covering this issue and issue 2 that we hope to reuse on future projects using this equipment. Issue 2: Solar Modules and Minimum 100 MPH Wind Please see the Unirac installation manual(attached)pages 3— 13. We are seeking your assistance with providing the documentation for the city of this equipment meeting the required wind speeds and for your determination of the necessary attachment point separations per the installation manual. Normally we attach this racking to the rafters on 4 foot centers, however,we are looking for your analysis to determine whether more or less spacing is appropriate for the attachment method using this equipment in Port Angeles. Please address this issue in the separate letter also that we could reuse for installations using this same equipment. Issue 3: Roof Construction Detail and Additional Weiaht of Solar Modules This is the issue you have addressed in the past. The 22 Sharp solar modules plus racking and PV Quick Mount flashings weigh a total of 1,218 pounds. Because the array will be split among the two roofs, each roof face will have 609 pounds of array. This weight will be distributed over 407.4 square feet for a weight ratio of 2.98 pounds per s.f.of roof area. The home was constructed over various periods of time. Neither the city nor the current home owner has a set of plans for the building. The roof is a gable-truss style construction with an attic. The roof pitch is 4:12(18.4 degrees)and the roof has a single layer of asphalt composition shingles. The subroofing consists of 7/16"plywood and the 2"x 6"trusses are spaced at 16"on center. There are two 12"high x 6"wide glulams spanning the length of the house(38')under the trusses on either side of the ridge. Please see the attached sketches and photos to explain the house roof construction. I I solar modules in a single row on west roof I I solar modules in a single row above the skylights. The layout of the solar array and the attachment method on either roof can be modified if necessary. If a different layout is preferable, just let me know. Please see attachments showing overall roof plan, dimensions, solar array dimensions and locations, and specifications for the solar modules and Quick Mount PV attachment hardware. Let me know if this is sufficient information for you to provide the needed information for the city of Port Angeles building permit.
