The existing concrete slab was demolished and a test pit was dug near this corner to determine the cause of the settlement. It was found that there was an area of unsuitable soil appearing to be an old fill in this area of the structure. Following is the plan to address the problem: 1. The unsuitable soil shall be removed to the native pit run material underlying this area of unsuitable soil. The approximate depth of the fill material varies but it is approximately 4' deep below the surrounding finish grade. 2. As the unsuitable material is removed the existing foundation will be temporarily braced using pipe columns and metal plates until concrete backfill can be placed in the excavation. 3. The final step is to place concrete backfill up to the bottom of the existing foundation system to provide new bearing support to competent native bearing soil. Once completed, the foundation system in this area of the structure which has settled, will be bearing on competent native soil. Please note that this office has verified that the unsuitable material has been removed and the new concrete backfill will bear on the competent native soil.
