HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/15/2019 Minutes PUBLIC SAFETY ADVISORY BOARD Port Angeles Fire Department Port Angeles, Washington May 15', 20019 CALL TO ORDER: Chairman Barnard called the regular meeting of the Public Safety Advisory Board to order at 6:00 p.m. ROLL CALL: Members Present: Alan Barnard, Evan Brown, Kathleen Graf, Pamela Lindquist,Thomas Mitchell, Lourene O'Brien, Kiara Schmitt, Shana Scott, Dr. Ed Zoble Members Absent: Nolan Duce, Teresa Sesma-Meyers Staff Present: Brian Smith, Police Chief; Ken Dubuc, Fire Chief; Catherine Dewey, Secretary APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: It was moved by Lourene and seconded by Kathleen to approve the April meeting minutes. Motion passed unanimously. NEW BUSINESS: Port Angeles Police Department Report: Chief Smith stated that Bargaining Units are in review now for both PENCOM and the Police Department. PENCOM Supervisors spoke at Council during open comment to discuss their staffing concerns and stated that attracting and recruiting the right people is a challenge. Chief does not believe that PENCOM will be fully staffed by the end of the year. Today is Police Memorial Day/Police Week. They are holding a memorial service at the Bell as well as a law enforcement Barbecue at noon on Saturday at the Veteran's Memorial Park. Port Angeles Fire Department Report: Hiring in the Fire Department: FD gave the written PM exam to two candidates one passed and one failed. New Firefighter Paramedic Michael Stroobant will start on July 1. Chief also noted that next week the FD is interviewing for EMT Paramedic Trainee position. FF/EMT Symonds is going to start Medic school in the Fall. Sparky Week was last week, was another great success. Chief announced that the Bike Safety Fair at the BMX track is this weekend. The Community Paramedic program is having an amazing impact in the community. Chief explained that Dan Montana, the Community Paramedic's time is split about 80/20 reflecting time spent in the homes vs in the community on the streets OLD BUSINESS: Traffic Safety—Chief Smith thanked those who attended the City Council meeting where Traffic Cameras were discussed, and a presentation was given. Chief was not happy with the PDN's headline the next day but was pleased with the article as a whole. Chief spoke to PDN and they made a revision on the title. Chief asked the Board if they were informed enough on the topic to give letter of recommendation to Council. Conversation ensued. Alan proposed that Chief write a recommendation to the Board for review. GOOD OF THE ORDER: Thomas— commented on the PDN article about the traffic cameras and the fact that opinions are right down the middle. Kathleen- Asked Chief if the FD has talked to the hospital regarding the Community Paramedic Program, Chief Dubuc answered that yes,he has. Dr. Zoble— asked about the status of Code Enforcement funding. ADJOURNMENT: Chairman Barnard adjourned the meeting at 7:18 p.m. The next meeting is Wednesday, September 18th,2019 at 6:00 p.m. at the Port Angeles Fire Department
