A total of 14 applications were received by the due date, 2 of those applicants later withdrew their applications, leaving the Board with a total of 12 applicants to consider. We have compiled all the applications that have been submitted for a seat on the Public Safety Advisory Board. In addition to the Board application, we also asked applicants to answer a few supplemental questions as well as identify the specific seat(s) that they are applying for. We have provided all documents and responses that we have received to date. Also included is a spreadsheet identifying which seat(s) each applicant is applying for. Please keep in mind, the Board is reviewing applicants to fill the following four vacant seats: 1. Enrolled Tribal Member 2. Enrolled Tribal Member 3. Represent Divers Segments of the Community (more specifically, those experienced with homelessness, substance abuse or who work with someone who has experienced these.) 4. I grew up here and went to middle school and spent my Freshman year here, I delivered papers downtown in middle school. I love this area and my return after twenty years I have seen how there is a homeless issue here as well the crime that is associated with the homelessness has been an issue with the businesses and residents. 3. How do you feel that your experience will provide relevant and useful advice to the Police and Fire Chief’s of the City of Port Angeles? In order to have good solutions there must be versatile input to collaborate with. My experiences both military and civilian will have different perspectives which can augment the collective in problem solving. I always enjoy working with EMS and LE, I have had a lot of experience working along their sides whiles serving the country. Yes, I have read the city ordnance and do not have any questions at this time about it. 2. Why are you interested in serving on the Public Safety Advisory Board for the City of Port Angeles? I was born and raised in Port Angeles and I've continued to live in Washington my whole life. After moving back a few years ago, I'd like to be more involved in the community. I'm currently the director of a mental health outreach program and was also the director of a youth homeless outreach program and definitely have concern about both those topics in this community. Also I'm a tribal member of the LEKT and would like to help represent that community within this board. 3. How do you feel that your experience will provide relevant and useful advice to the Police and Fire Chief’s of the City of Port Angeles? Well as someone who has had first hand experiences with cops here growing up as a youth and the way situations were handled, were definitely concerning to me. Then to now with my clients who often have interaction with both police and EMS services, are both concerning as well. Whatever I can do to help people in this community have a better understanding of the police, fire and EMS services and the way they operate. Also, in helping police, fire and EMS have a better understanding of working with people who may have mental or substance abuse issues. Keeping our police and fire personnel informed and up to date on how to deal with “hard to help” people is a great concern for many. Whether dealing with vets, homeless, LGBTQ, mental health, age, or other deciding factors. We need to keep those safe that cannot speak or act for their own best interest. I have worked for 20 years with the population that live on the streets and I know many of their ongoing issues. I plan on learning more by joining and being active as a board member. It's quite explanatory. If for any reason I have any questions I will call. To question # 2 I believe I could be an asset to the board, I was homeless for a small amount of time and associated into that group. It helped the First Methodist Church quite a bit having first hand experience. I'm familiar with whats a necessity for making it safe for the community and for the less fortunate people. I think I could bring alot to the table. I believe it would be helpful for those who work with the community and understanding what they are saying and explaining to them about safety issues. We have businesses that need to feel safe and secure. All people need to safe secure including children and animals. People need to understand each other's needs and what's important. Question #3 Just like anyone else who has not experienced homelessness can learn first hand how to deal with thus issue. And the community also needs their support in feeling safe and secure ,and wants and needs and expections. Yes, I have read the current City Ordinance establishing the Public Safety Advisory Board and I do not have any questions at this time. 2. Why are you interested in serving on the Public Safety Advisory Board for the City of Port Angeles? I have always had an interest in Public Safety in my community. I am due to finish a degree in Criminology with a minor in Gender Studies. I believe that serving my community is my duty and an honor and I feel it is the best use of my years of knowledge and experience in public service. I feel I have a unique view and perspective that combines both social service as well as criminal justice and am eager to share my insights from my experiences and my own research and education. 3. How do you feel that your experience will provide relevant and useful advice to the Police and Fire Chief’s of the City of Port Angeles? I have a background in public service starting in 1994 where I worked in various positions in Community Corrections under the WA Department of Corrections and United States Federal Bureau of Prisons from Assistant Director of a Work Release to Assistant Operations Manager of a Corrections based Treatment Center and Detox and Federal Corrections Counselor. Not only did I directly supervise individuals releasing from prison (some from life sentences) into direct supervision and on home confinement, but I also wrote the policies, hired and trained the operations staff that supervised offenders entering these facilities and into the community but who were also responsible to respond in the event of a crisis. In addition to my work experience, I am a 2nd generation Asian American, child of a 1st generation Asian American who immigrated after surviving a childhood during the Japanese occupation of South Korea. She married my father, who was a World War II veteran, and while he worked overseas, she wore his shoes stuffed with newspaper. I grew up wearing clothes she made and eating rice in bowls of water. Being of mixed descent, I spent a life always being the "other." Whether I lived in Korea or America, many saw what set me apart. In Korea I was chased from playgrounds for being half white. My first month living in Port Angeles, I was approached at a bus stop and told "My people" were annoying because we "got free land" and "didn't have to pay taxes" because the person thought I was Native. Just last month I heard the word "Chink" although they took it back when they noticed me watching. I have also been a victim of domestic violence some 13 - 15 years ago. A great deal of my trauma lies around how my case was handled by the criminal justice system which includes being yelled at by a magistrate when petitioning for a protection order, having my proof of service lost forcing me to get creative to extend a protection order after it was violated, and so on. I also understand that at that time, the system was learning. There are new policies and laws in place now that were not in place then. For the last 8 plus years, I have worked directly with the homeless population, victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, people diagnosed with mental illness and have helped create unique partnerships in our community to address some of the most pressing needs. I believe my experience both personal and professional places me in a unique position to see issues from a broad spectrum of perspectives allowing me to provide balanced, nuanced, experience-based advice that can take the needs of the community into account while also considering first responder safety and needs at the same time.
