HomeMy WebLinkAboutPSAB Minutes 04/21/2021 PUBLIC SAFETY ADVISORY BOARD Virtual Meeting Port Angeles, Washington April 21, 2021 6:00 pm CALL TO ORDER: Board Secretary Catherine Dewey called the regular meeting of the Public Safety Advisory Board to order at 6:04 p.m. ROLL CALL: Members Present: Gayle Brauner, Evan Brown, Jesse Charles, Jesse Driese, Kathleen Graf, Kelsey Lane, Michael McGuire, Andrew Schwab, Shana Scott, Octavia Smith, Viola Ware Absent: Joseph Turrey Staff Present: Mike Sanders, Assistant Fire Chief, Brian Smith, Police Chief, Jason Viada, Deputy Police Chief, Catherine Dewey, Secretary Guests: John Vanek, M.A., Consultant and Author Port Angeles Border Patrol Station Chief Corey Lindsay; Officer Ron Cameron; Officer Swift Sanchez Shana Scott, Temporary Board Chair welcomed newly elected members. REVIEW AND APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: A motion to approve the March Minutes was made by Michael and a Second was made by Viola. OLD BUSINESS: NEW BUSINESS: a) Deputy Police Chief Jason Viada introduced and presented resumes for the Independent Investigative Team (IIT) Detectives, explaining to the Board the history of and intentions of the IIT in Port Angeles and introducing the new team members - SRO Swift Sanchez and Detective Ron Cameron. Swift Sanchez and Detective Cameron presented their background and experience to the Board. b) Port Angeles Police Department Report: Chief Smith noted that the PD 2020 Annual Report is included in the Agenda Packet for review. c) Port Angeles Fire Department Report: Chief Sanders introduced himself to the new Board members as he is sitting in for Chief Dubuc this evening. Chief Sanders mentioned the retirement of Assistant Chief Keith Bogues and explained the recruiting process nationwide that is underway to find his replacement. July I" Todd German will retire after 29 years as a FF/EMT so the Department continues the recruitment process in filling the line positions as well as the Community Paramedic position. d) A Community Response Human Trafficking Presentation by John Vanek, PowerPoint enclosed. John conclude his presentation with a conversation and local Port Angeles Border Patrol Station Chief Corey Lindsay spoke to how this directly affects our community. Conversation ensued. OTHER BUSIEESS: PUBLIC COMMENT: Carolyn Wilcox —asked John Vanek if he could address missing and murdered indigenous women in regards to human trafficking and thanked the presenters GOOD OF THE ORDER: Charles-noted his experience with human trafficking on the reservation and expressed his excitement to be a member of the Board. Graf—Thanked John Vanek and guests for being here and welcomed the new members. Lane- Thanked the guests for the presentation. Kelsey also had a community member reach out to her about how to suggest a crosswalk at Chamber and First, Chief Smith offered his assistance. Kelsey also noted that Officer Swift has been a great asset to the High School. McGuire- Asked for clarity as to what the "good of the order" is intended for. He also thanked the guests for the presentation. Ware—Viola thanked the presenters Smith—Thanked the Board and expressed her gratitude for being a new member. ADJOURNMENT: Temporary Chairman Scott adjourned the meeting at 7:25 pm. The next Scheduled meetings to be determined
