RE Specific Description of Damage Repair for Your Residence This report is limited to the description of the repair of the damage due to a large tree branch from the pine tree on the adjacent property to the west falling on the south edge of the residence and then onto the deck in front. There was not investigation review or analysis performed regarding the remainder of the residence for gravity or lateral load capacities The portion of the residence repair described below is intended to meet the current 2009 IBC (International Building Code) as described in section 3403 1 and 3403.2. The deck, one step up from grade level, at the front entrance was obviously severely damaged and is intended to be replaced in a similar manner with new materials without structural design by this office Three beams will be installed to replace the damaged framing Plywood will be added to support the roof overhang at the front to replace reliance on the fascia boards for structural support. The first beam to install is the header over the west window (beam "A'), a 3 1/8 x 7' /2 24F V4 glu -lam about 8 feet long requiring (2) 2 x 4 trimmers at the south end and a single at the north Two full height studs are required adjacent to the trimmers The next beam to install is the replacement of the soffit (beam "B extending from the support west of the front entry door to the window header (beam "A This beam (shall be a 3 1/8 x 13 24F V4 glu -lam about 10 feet long, requiring a single support stud adjacent to the entry and an adjacent full- height stud A Simpson HGU8 3 25/10 hanger shall support this beam at the window header (beam A This hanger provides twice the required load capacity when fully nailed, so nailing into plates above the header (beam "A and missing one or two rows of nails at or near the top edge of this header will supply adequate capacity if solid wood shims are provided at any gap between header (beam "A and the top plates at this location The third beam to install shall also be a 3 1/8 x 13'/2 24F V4 glu -lam This soffit (beam "C") is parallel to and about 2 '/2 feet in from the header (beam "A This beam "C is about 71/2 feet long, requiring double stud support at the north end and a Simpson HU3.25/12 hanger to soffit (beam "B 11371 rpt Report to Mark Ostroot June 28, 2011 Page 2 of 2 The existing roof overhang of the gable end of old 1 x 3 t g is not continuous over the gable end wall thus requiring the fascia boards for support. The west fascia board was damaged from the tree branch impact which allowed the 1 x 3 t g to noticeably rotate downward from the wall The existing ridge beam extension also does not continue into the peak of the enclosed attic. Therefore, this ridge beam extension also rotated downward toward the fascia board intersection bringing the east fascia downward and the east overhang 1 x 3 t g with it. The fascia boards were required for structural support but they rest on the roofing and are not connected to the structure Therefore the best method of overhang support is to cantilever plywood from the roof framing The current roof sheathing is thin plywood (approximately 3/8 -inch) over skipped sheathing This roof sheathing should be removed for approximately 6 feet into the roof framing to allow a joint at the center of a rafter The plywood (or OSB) thickness should match the overall thickness of the existing skipped sheathing and thin plywood overlay, expected to be 1 inch or the 1 1/8 inch of 2-4 -1 plywood This thicker plywood provides the capacity to support the roof overhang and replaced fascia boards which could be smaller from a structural standpoint since they no longer will need to provide structural support. This heavier plywood also has the capability of providing additional load sharing as compared with typical sheathing The plywood should be nailed with 10d hot dipped galvanized box nails at 6 inches on center to all supports with a double row at the exterior wall plate These rafters west of the ridge should be investigated by the engineer after sheathing removal prior to covering with the new plywood Significant damage is not anticipated as there was no observable distress in the ceiling plaster or plasterboard However in Chapter 14 of the 2nd Edition of Forensic Structural Enaineerina Handbook 2010, I indicated the potential of fiber damage in timber from impact including falling trees and Case Study 10 regarding specific structural analysis of impact effects If some unobserved fiber damage on the rafters near the south edge of the roof was sustained from the tree branch impact, the additional load sharing capacity of this heavier plywood will be beneficial Please call if you have any questions regarding the specifics of this repair End 3 Sheets of structural calculations Cc.
