They are: 1 The use of 5/8' diameter Rawl expansion stud anchors in place of the 5/8' diameter adhesive anchors is acceptable. The expansion anchors should be installed per the requirements of ICC Evaluation Service report ESR -1532 with a 5 -inch embedment. Special inspection was not assumed. 2. A Simpson SSTB34 anchor was specified at two locations in the wall pier between the two garage door openings on the permit drawings (Section B on Sheet S1). During construction, it was found that the height of the stem wall above the top of the existing footing is only 1-8. In addition, it is necessary to have the anchor bolt project a minimum of x" above the top of the concrete in order to provide adequate length to pass through the (3) 2x plates and engage the Simpson HDQ8 holdown. I understand that the owner has proposed to use a Simpson SSTB28 anchor with 20- inches of embedment This results in approximately 5- inches of the anchor being exposed below the embedment line shown on the anchor The Simpson SSTB series anchor bolts are designed to accommodate a two-pour installation whereby a 4 -inch slab is poured over the top of a stem wall. (See attached copy of page 24 of the 2005 Edition of the Simpson catalog.) This 4 inches of concrete is considered to be nonstructural, with the result being that an SSTB28 anchor has an effective embedment of only 20 7/8- inches. The allowable capacity given by Simpson at the 20 7/8- inch embedment is 10,100 pounds. A capacity of 4,200 pounds is required based on the structural calculations. Since even an SSTB16 anchor with only an 8 5/8 -inch effective embedment provides this capacity it is structurally acceptable to use a Simpson SSTB28 anchor with 20- inches of embedment at the two locations where an SSTB34 anchor was specified. In summary it is structurally acceptable to substitute an SSTB28 anchor with 20- inches of embedment (resulting in approximately 5 inches of anchor rod exposed below the scribed embedment line) at the two locations in the center wall pier between the garage doors.
