Civil Engineer Subject: Jean Gilliam Remodel by Rickenbacher Home Repair New Kitchen Window At the request of Mr Rickel )acher I reviewed the structure of Jean Gilliam's residence at 1134 Columbia Street and designed a shear wall for the south wall of the kitchen to allow for a larger window Ms. Gilliam would like to replace the existing door and window In accordance with the prescriptive lateral bracing requirements of the International Residential Code, a 4 foot brace panel or a 2'8 alternate brace panel would normally be required at the exterior corner of the building. In order to install a larger window and maintain the structural bracing of the building, I have designed a shear wall to allow up to a 10' wide window opening. A minimum of 12 of wall on each end will be maintained, and the entire interior of the wall will be sheathed with 7/16' OSB or '/2 CDX Plywood. The corners of the window will be reinforced with metal straps to transfer the shear forces, and the narrow wall sections will be nailed with 8d nails at 2 on center The strength of this arrangement will be equal or better to the standard four foot brace panel. Please see the attached calculations and construction details for further clarification.
